About

Cheryl "Salt" James

Cheryl “Salt” James is a pioneering rapper, songwriter, producer, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and one half of the trailblazing hip-hop duo Salt-N-Pepa—an all-female group whose historic rise reshaped the landscape of women in rap. Born in Bushwick, Brooklyn, James met Sandra “Pepa” Denton while attending Queensborough Community College, where the seeds of their iconic partnership were planted. Their debut single, “The Showstopper,” quickly gained momentum on New York’s WBLS, setting the stage for a career defined by innovation, empowerment, and groundbreaking firsts.

Salt-N-Pepa’s 1986 debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, propelled by the global hit “Push It,” made history when the group became the first female rap act to earn platinum status. The momentum continued with 1988’s A Salt with a Deadly Pepa, followed by 1990’s Blacks’ Magic, where James stepped boldly into her role as a writer and producer. Her self-written and self-produced hit “Expression” became Salt-N-Pepa’s first No. 1 record on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart and established her as the first female emcee to write and produce her own platinum single. She went on to craft empowerment-driven anthems like “Independent,” “The Body Beautiful,” and “Ain’t Nuthin’ But a She Thing.”

The group’s 1993 album Very Necessary became a five-times platinum cultural landmark and further solidified their influence. In 1995, Salt-N-Pepa won the GRAMMY Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, making them the first women in hip-hop to take home the award. James continued to expand her artistic reach with her groundbreaking collaborations on “Stomp” for Kirk Franklin and God’s Property’s chart-topping gospel album. In 1997, she executive-produced Salt-N-Pepa’s Brand New, which was certified gold within a month of release.Decades into their career, the group’s legacy has continued to be formally recognized.

Salt-N-Pepa received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy in 2021, followed by a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2022 and their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025 as the only female group of any genre inducted under the prestigious Influence Award —honors that reflect a legacy permanently etched into music history.
